Once a year, Zukunft Pop (Future Pop) sheds light on developments in music history and shows new perspectives in pop culture. The conference was initiated in 2009 from Prof. Udo Dahmen and received financial support from the Baden-Württemberg State Institute for Communication. Artists and experts from the music industry, cultural policy, education and higher education, pop promotion and the media exchange ideas about current pop-culture-related topics. These include, for example, the influence of subcultures on mainstream music or the development of so-called extremism pop, which deals explicitly with anti-democratic subcultures in pop music. The goal is to use the diversity of speakers to observe and discuss the annual theme from as broad a perspective as possible. With panels, discussions and varied workshops, the conference creates fresh impulses. In 2018, Zukunft Pop took the form of a hip-hop symposium. It was curated by the Heidelberg hip-hop legend Torch, a.k.a. Frederik Hahn. Guests included Samy Deluxe and Jan Delay.
