Popakademie graduates launch music analysis tool CYANITE

05. July 2019

Next level. The Music and Creative Industries graduates Markus Schwarzer, Jakob Höflich and Joshua Weikert started this week with their second business idea. With the online service CYANITE, they offer the first freely accessible application based on artificial intelligence that makes the emotions in songs visible. The developed technology visualizes subjective emotions from every music audio file with objective data. The tool is intended to support players from the music and creative industries in their music decisions.

Markus, Jakob and Joshua got to know each other in 2016 during their master studies Music and Creative Industries at the Popakademie. During the project workshop in the third semester, they were already working on their idea for an app that captures musical moments, i.e. that accompanies one's own image and video content with the appropriate music. After finishing their studies, they went into business for themselves with Groovecat. Their app for musical storytelling has already won several awards, such as the Culture and Creative Pilot 2018 or in the "BW goes Mobile" competition of the Media and Film Society Baden-Württemberg.

The numerous musical moments collected transparently by the Groovecat app are now the basis for the new online service CYANITE. The interaction of music, situation and emotion is the core idea that drives the founders and the team, now consisting of eight people. "We want to make the understanding and the emotional and situational music experience tangible", says Markus Schwarzer.

Cyanite is free of charge for companies in its basic version, and soon there will also be an app for end users that provides music suggestions for videos and photos. Anyone who wants to try out CYANITE can create a free account.
