Jan Zehrfeld began his jazz guitar studies at the University of Arts in Graz including a semester abroad at the Sibelius Academy Helsinki. He completed it at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich and holds a degree in jazz music and jazz music teaching as well as postgraduate studies at the GIT in Los Angeles.

Since 2003 he has been a freelance musician and has played in numerous bands and productions (e.g. with Klaus Doldinger, Uwe Ochsenknecht, the Hilliard Ensemble or the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra) - from metal to pop-rock to jazz- fusion and experimental music. He also teaches guitar at the Popakademie and the Music College Regensburg. The Freak Guitar Camp in Gothenburg, the GIT in Los Angeles and the Munich Guitar Institute MGI have already welcomed him as a guest lecturer.

In 2004 he founded the band Panzerballett, where he is responsible for almost all compositions and arrangements. The jazz metal band has already achieved cult status in clubs and at festivals around the world, has made numerous television and radio appearances (WDR, ARTE, 3sat, BR, SR, SWR) and has produced six studio albums and two live DVDs with renowned guest musicians such as Trilok Gurtu, Randy Brecker and many more.

Since 2015 Jan Zehrfeld is composer and musical director of the Nibelungen Festival in Worms ("Gemetzel").
