Popakademie Talks on the topic of "Music and Power"

In the 2024 summer semester, the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg is once again hosting the Popakademie Talks series.

Guests from the fields of music and culture will present the topic of "Music and Power": with Marina Fischer, Prof. Dr. Kristine Ringsager and Moses Pelham.

The Popakademie Talks start on Tuesday, 16.04.2024. At 7 p.m. Marina Fischer will talk about the abuse of power at universities. She is a psychologist and systemic consultant. Fischer conducts research on working conditions in the arts and cultural sector as part of the doctoral program "Good Work in a Transformative World" at the Social Science Research Center Berlin and the Institute Gender in Medicine at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Here she investigates young artists' experiences of abuse of power and violence in the context of their university education and early career phases. Fischer is particularly interested in the perspectives of (multiply) marginalized artists, in the connections between experiences of power abuse and mental health, and in power-sensitive prevention approaches for artistic teaching and learning contexts. In addition to her research, she is part of Themis Vertrauensstelle e.V., the independent nationwide counselling organization against sexualized violence in the cultural and media industry. Here, victims, witnesses and employers receive free legal and psychological support.

On Tuesday, 04.06.2024 at 7 pm, Prof:In Dr:In Kristine Ringsager will be a guest at the Popakademie.Ringsager is a professor at the Faculty of Arts and Cultural Studies at the University of Copenhagen.Her research focuses on the anthropological study of music, with an emphasis on racialized and gendered cultures and infrastructures and the use of music in processes of social change.She is the leader of the research project Gendering Music Matter (2022-2024), which investigates gender inequalities in the Danish popular music industry.A particular focus is on how the infrastructure of the popular music industry influences the experiences and navigation of women and gender minoritized music makers in pursuing their careers in the field.She was previously involved in the projects Music as Social Intervention and Contemporary Music from the Middle East (2020-2022).Ringsager completed her PhD on the Danish-language rap scene with a focus on citizenship, migration politics, experienced otherness and social transformation.

On Tuesday,18.06.2024 from 7 pm Moses Pelham talks about music and power. The rapper, author, producer and label owner Moses Pelham is the first and only rapper in the world to be represented in the Official German Charts for over five decades. With his Rödelheim Hartreim project, he created the blueprint for what would later be called street rap, discovered and produced Sabrina Setlur, among others, founded the soul trio GLASHAUS and signed Azad.He is responsible for 29 LPs, 94 single releases, 90 chart entries and a total of 1013 weeks in the German charts.He sold 10,000,000 records through his label 3p alone.Pelham has won the ECHO, the Goethe Plakette, the German Record Critics' Honorary Award, the Golden Camera and the HipHop.de Award for his life's work.Moses Pelham is currently working on his last studio album, which will be released in fall 2024 and is entitled "Letzte Worte". Pelham and his band will be touring Germany for the last time under the title "Letzte Worte LIVE".

The talks will take place at the Popakademie in room 001, registration is not necessary.
