PopakademieDigital publishes whitepaper

16. November 2021

The Popakademie Baden-Württemberg publishes a new edition of the PopakademieDigital whitepaper series dedicated to the topic "(How) does TikTok influence the German charts". As part of the project workshop, the four music business students Akansha Kumar, Jannick Steinke, Sebastian Gorki and Valerian Dilger spent a semester looking at how TikTok influences the German Spotify and Airplay charts.

The social media platform TikTok plays a major role in modern music marketing. However, little data exists on how exactly TikTok influences the German music industry. The SMIX.LAB project under the guidance of David Stammer (Project Manager Digital Innovation at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg) and in cooperation with the music/data analysis company Chartmetric investigated this connection.

The topic is of particular topicality, as TikTok continues its rapid development as a leading medium for young people and thus addresses one of the most important target groups for the music industry. It is impossible to imagine modern music marketing without the platform. Anyone who is active on TikTok has probably already experienced how certain songs appear in their own feed and can be found in the music charts a short time later. The research project tried to make this influence measurable and to analyze the musical influence of TikTok on the German charts, using the tools of Chartmetric as well as quantitative research methods. The results are now described in Whitepaper #5.

The results are also published as blog posts and presented in the Chartmetric podcast: Blog Chartmetric

With PopakademieDigital, the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg regularly publishes white papers on topics related to the digital music industry and current trends in the industry. The series is conducted at SMIX.LAB (Social Music Innovation and Experience Lab), the digital competence center of the Popakademie.
