Popakademie Talks #GenderMachtPop - Power Structures in Popular Music

On Tuesday, 16 November, Popakademie Talks with Dr. Melanie Ptatscheck and Dr. Monika Schoop will take place online from 7 pm. The two will address the questions: What does power do in pop music? And what does gender have to do with it? In doing so, they bring diverse power relations and their effects to the fore. Among other things, they will address the lack of visibility - or even absence - of female read and non-binary persons, the (re)production of exclusions in musical socialisation and music education, media representations as well as sexualised violence. The lecture invites to critically question and break up existing power structures and lays a foundation for the discussion of intervention strategies.

Dr. Melanie Ptatscheck is a popular music researcher and lecturer at various German universities and colleges. She studied Popular Music and Media in Paderborn and Vienna and received her PhD from Leuphana University Lüneburg with her dissertation "Suchtgenese & Selbstkonzepte. Biographical Studies on Heroin Addiction of Musicians in Los Angeles". After research stays in New York City and Los Angeles and further training as a Mental Health Facilitator, she received a guest professorship at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. With a focus on musicians' health, she works at the interface between Popular Music Studies and Public Health on the topic of Mental Health.

Dr. Monika E. Schoop is Junior Professor of Musicology (especially Popular Music Studies) at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Together with Federico Spinetti, she coordinated the DFG project "Sounding Memories - Nazi Persecution and Resistance in Contemporary Music from Germany" (2017-2020). In addition to memory studies, her research interests include popular music in the Philippines, transformations of the music economy through (digital) technologies, and gender and queer studies. She is the author of Independent Music and Digital Technology in the Philippines (2017) and co-editor of the Special Issue "Music and the Politics of Memory: Resounding Antifascism across Borders" of the journal Popular Music and Society (2021).
