Popakademie lecturer receives WDR Jazz Prize

19. November 2021

Kemal Dinç, a lecturer in the Bachelor of World Music program at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg, is the winner of the WDR Jazz Prize 2022. Dinç is awarded in the category "Music Cultures" for the Bağlama.

Kemal Dinç is one of the most important instrumentalists and a fine mind for playing the Bağlama family of instruments. In his compositions, he gives a contemporary-modern character to Anatolian melodies. Dinç serves as department chair in Bağlama in the bachelor's degree program in world music at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg.

The WDR Jazz Prize has been awarded annually since 2004 and is endowed with a total of 30,000 euros. WDR awards the prize to musicians from North Rhine-Westphalia. An eight-member jury consisting of former WDR Jazz Prize winners, organizers and journalists selects the winners in the categories of composition, improvisation and music cultures. The award ceremony will take place on February 4, 2022.

The Bachelor's program in World Music focuses on Turkish, Arabic, West African and Indian music, as well as their connection to popular music. Instruments that can be documented here are, for example, Bağlama and Oud. Interested musicians can apply for the World Music program, which starts in the winter semester of 2022, until April 30.
