YouTube and Popakademie release AI toolboard

12. September 2025

As part of a YouTube-sponsored project at SMIX.LAB, current AI tools in the music industry are being researched, described according to use cases, and summarized on an overview page. The project will run from November 2024 to October 2025 under the direction of David Stammer (Project Manager, Digital Innovation) and continues the collaboration between the Popakademie and YouTube (e.g., white paper on generative AI).

“We are delighted to be able to support the Popakademie and David Stammer's research work. The AI Toolboard is a great example of how students are finding innovative and practical ways to explore the role of AI in music and actively shape the future of the music industry.” – Kiki Ganzemüller, Manager, EMEA Music Partnerships, Google.

David Stammer: “Working with different AI tools in the field of music made the complexity and dynamics of the topic clear to the students. Many applications now combine several functions, and new use cases have also been identified.”

The overview on the Popakademie website initially divides the tools into two main categories: music production (tools that support artists in music production or can be used in specific areas of music production) and functional music (tools that can create complete pieces of music designed to achieve a specific effect or purpose). Furthermore, the overview can be filtered by use cases (e.g., songwriting or vocal synthesis) and target groups (professional musicians, hobby musicians, consumers, or creators).

The project is headed by David Stammer (Project Management Digital Innovation), with Lara Mirek and Dinio Maag (both Music Business B.A.) as well as Tim Fischböck and Peter Meister (both Music and Creative Industries M.A.) working on the project. The project is scheduled to conclude in October with a music business toolboard that shows which tools can be used in various sub-sectors of the music industry.

Thanks to funding from the Popländ initiative of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts, a follow-up project will be carried out at the SMIX.LAB of the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg. The project, which will run until early 2027 and has a social science focus, aims to use empirical research to gain insights into how future scenarios might play out in various fields relevant to the music industry. The next step will then be to develop and present appropriate practical adaptation options. The focus will be on the practicability of AI applications, the ethical and legal implications of AI applications, and any harmonization processes that may be necessary in the future. The findings of the project will also be projected onto educational and training approaches. With the POPLÄND initiative, the state government has been promoting a wide range of measures to strengthen Baden-Württemberg as a pop music location since 2025.
