Jonathan Sell

composition, rehearsal band

Jonathan Sell is a double and electric bassist whose musical repertoire ranges from jazz to rock and blues, from Arabic maqam to Indian raga. The world of music is too diverse to be limited to a single style. So he slips into different roles and creates an intercultural global musical aesthetic from its totality. He was drawn to the bass at a very early age, to the power and warmth of this instrument. Sell's sonic ideal on the double bass is deliberately broad and woody, and on the electric bass he is primarily influenced by his love of the '60s Fender Precision Bass.

The role of the bassist as a link and supporter has not only musical meaning for him: in various transcultural projects the friendly cohesion and the common artistic vision are especially important to him. Through the close connection to the other musicians and frequent travels to their different home countries, what was originally "foreign" about these cultures became part of his horizon and personality. Then the peculiarities of Arab, Turkish, Persian and Indian musical cultures, such as microtonality, richness of individual interpretation and rhythmic variety, and those of Western musical cultures, such as polyphony, counterpoint and jazz improvisation, can form a new unity.
