Popakademie to stream live concert on World Refugee Day

16. June 2020

On Saturday, 20 June 2020, starting at 8 pm, the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg will stream a live concert on the occasion of World Refugee Day. The "Work In Progress Club" event will be held in cooperation with and for the benefit of the UN Refugee Agency, the German partner of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

"For many years, the Popakademie has been an institution of tolerance and freedom in its attitude towards diversity and its understanding of difference for all those who study, teach or work in our institution - regardless of their origin, background, religious or ideological beliefs and sexual orientation. On World Refugee Day 2020, we are therefore once again showing solidarity with all those who oppose racism and the restriction of tolerance, respect and appreciation", explain the Popakademie directors Prof. Udo Dahmen and Prof. Hubert Wandjo.

The concert with students and alumni from the artistic field of the Popakademie will be broadcast live from the Mannheim university institution. It will be broadcast via Vimeo.

Live on stage there are bands and musicians of the Popakademie from different branches of pop and world music, such as Loof, Ok.danke.tschüss or Laura Lato. The performances are intended to draw attention to the work of UNO refugee aid.

"The Popakademie has been a partner for UN refugee aid for years. With the concert on World Refugee Day, the musicians of the Popakademie will join us in sending a strong signal of humanity and solidarity with the well over 70 million people on the run," says Peter Ruhenstroth-Bauer, Managing Director of UN Refugee Aid Germany.

Millions of people are forced to leave their homes. That is why every year, on 20 June, we pay tribute to the special strength, courage and resilience that refugees, internally displaced persons and stateless persons show every day. Ruhenstroth-Bauer: "We look forward to committed young artists, their music and, together with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, to the joint message: "No one flees voluntarily - but we can decide to help these people in need completely voluntarily".
